Having waded through the variety of resources on this same topic over several years and serving in a role and mission focused on this arena, I was pleasantly surprised. Of course, Ken points out the usual items in the realm of soul care but he goes on to strike new ground and delve into fresh territory.

I particularly enjoyed a few aspects of his approach: Those are unique within the overall soul care space. Ken's overall approach is solid too: While Ken does a fine job of pointing to Christ as the primary source of growth in this area and notes the importance of sacrifice especially Christ's , I would've loved to have seen a more robust treatment of the primacy of walking with Jesus at the center of his work.

That minor critique aside, this is a terrific addition to the genre on Soul Care. It could well be a book that helps you in your growth path in life and ministry. Get the book and give some of these practices a try. I'm sure you'll grow along the way! One of the things that I love about this book is the inclusion of community and relationship as absolutely vital for the Christian soul and something that we should invest ourselves in; it's far too common to hear Christians focus on what we can do for ourselves and on developing a private faith and prayer life.

But faith is something we do together - the Bible uses far more second-person plurals than it does singulars - and so kudos to this author for including that.

There wasn't a lot of stunning wordsmith and quote-worthy insights; it's the kind of book that you have to read in full context to understand, the kind of book that must be devoured in sections and not in sound bytes, which makes it a little bit more difficult of a book to get extremely excited about when describing it to someone else. To tell you about this book is essentially to tell you a "you had to read it" story because it's just that hard to condense.

It will bless you. This book truly captured my attention and kept me focused on the message. I wanted to read more. Our rhythms become our everyday liturgy, the sacred cadence of the hours that reorient our tired souls. Each finger knows where to hit the next note. She hardly thinks about it. So go our daily songs and rhythms of the soul, the essence of our habits. Day after day we practice and play our chosen series of notes, performing actions cued by other actions. And what Ken Shigematsu knows, what he shares in this survival guide , is this:.

They hold on to Christ. They hold on to Him who is holy and healing. We hold on to the True Vine. But it is certain that the Christian does grow in grace. Blessed assurance, Jesus assures us: Many people today feel harried and empty, driven by an unrelenting ambition to accomplish something big and meaningful. Yet in contrast to the constant pressure we feel to achieve, Scripture defines success altogether differently.

In Survival Guide for the Soul , bestselling author and pastor Ken Shigematsu speaks poignantly about overcoming the obstacles that keep us from flourishing in our spiritual lives. He reveals the secret to a robust inner spiritual life: Join me in GIFT — and become a brokenhearted hallelujah, a GIFT to the world, every day for a year, living broken and given, one intentional act of brokenhearted compassion at a time.

This book truly caused me to think about the ramifications of a driven life versus a life lived at drawing closer to Jesus Christ and God. The message is clear. The style is engaging. The words are powerful. So if you are looking for a book about how to have a closer relationship with Jesus Christ is the midst of a world that believes power and success in the workplace are more important, this is the book for you.

I definitely recommend you check it out for yourself.

Also like the many examples of practical suggestions for dealing worldly pressure. I have mentioned in earlier reviews that some Christian titles I have read in the past were full of pious platitudes and well short of offering many practical suggestions. Not so with this title! Will read again in the future. We need to see everyone as having value as a person created by God Almighty. I was given a review copy by Zondervan in exchange for a fair review.
